The microprocessor chip of your computer is based on millions of tiny transistor switches (to learn more click here ). As transistors decrease in size, more fit on the chip and PC’s become more and more powerful. However, transistors cannot get much smaller (they are currently about 0.1 micron by 0.1 micron). Further, even now they release so much heat that the chips threaten to cook themselves (along with the laptop user’s lap!).
For these reasons, scientists and engineers are looking for completely different ways of storing and analyzing information. Quantum-dot Cellular Automata are one possible solution.
