At the top of the column is the electron gun that generates the electrons.

This is followed by two pairs of magnetic lenses and apertures that concentrate the electrons together and direct them downward.

Finally, in a third magnetic lens, the electrons are focused into an ultra-narrow beam and scanned across the sample.
