The full piezoelectric assembly produces the incredibly precise motions needed to drive the tip of the scanning probe microscope across samples.

Piezoelectricity, along with techniques for preparing the ultra-sharp cantilever tips, thus provides the basis for the SPM's atomic scale resolution.
